Dave Bentley suggested I provide a permanent place for notices which affect us all, such as obituaries, events, gatherings etc. Fine idea, so here it is. It'll always be at the top of the list of topics.

Please limit postings here to such announcements, rather than discussions. Feel free to create new threads to discuss announcements posted here, though. Thanks.

Mike

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, I read about the passing of Robert J Gillis, councilor in S-4 between 1950 and 1955, at the Mt. View Nursing Home, Ossipee, NH. He had been associated with Adrian College in Michigan, retiring and settling in Wolfeboro in 1986 with his wife.

He was mostly a sailing instructor, an avid and expert horse shoe pitcher, and an all around good guy. Many of us may remember him by his rather direct way of enforcing "quiet" after senior taps - he would walk through a tent and "remind" a talking camper by "gently" placing his 5-D cell batteries metal flashlight neatly along the part line of the eloquent young camper's head. Generally, dare I say always, only one trip through a tent was necessary.

Bob also spoke at the reunion and dedication of the plaque in 1995.

I have talked with his wife and expressed the condolences of Camp Wyanoke both corporately and personally.

I am sad to report the death of Dr. Bob Arnot's mother, Mary Louise Arnot, as listed in today's Boston Globe. Mrs. Arnot lived in Wellesley, MA, for many years, and was living in Scarborough, ME, at the time of her death.

Many of us remember Bob as a camper and staff member, particularly his skills with the trumpet.

I'm sure we all extend our condolences to the Arnot Family.

PostPosted: Fri Jul 24, 2009 9:09 pm    Post subject: Obituary for Shirley O'Connor Reply with quote

It is with deep sadness that I report the passing of Shirley O'Connor, mother of Justin and Brian O'Connor, and Christine O'Connor Madigan. Justin and Brian were campers and staff members, and the connection between the O'Connor Family and the Bentley Family is more than 50 years in duration. Shirley (and family) lived many years in Winchester, MA, directly across the street from us, eventually moving to Lexington, MA. It would be hard to find two families who spent more time together than the O'Connors and the Bentleys.

I am sure that all who know Justin and Brian and Christine join me and my family in extending sincere condolences and prayers at this time.

Some of the members of this Forum who were buying the Sunday newspaper after Sunday lunch might remember the gentleman selling the papers out of the back of his vehicle near the water cooler. Sadly, Bernard "Bun" McBride, age 87, died today, peacefully, at home.

"Bun" sold papers to Wyanokers for about 30 years, and worked for Black's Paper and Gift Store in Wolfeboro for about 69 years (his only employer!). If you were buying a Sunday paper in the 40's, 50's or 60's, "Bun" probably sold it to you.

He is an icon in Wolfeboro, and will be greatly missed by all.

Hi Dave,

Was Bun related to the Wolfeboro Inn McBrides?

I don't believe so. His parents used to own Black's Paper store in the early 1940's when it was called The Paper Store. It became Black's when George Black owned it, and the name has carried through. "Bun" worked for 5 different owners, but, as they all said, "He was the Boss".

It has just been brought to my attention that Scott Creelman is battling a very insidious form of cancer. I am sorry I do not know any specific details, but, apparently his family has gathered to provide support and comfort.

Scott was a Wyanoke camper and staff member for a number of years during the 1950s, and, later went on to Dartmouth College where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically.

I'm sure that at this time in his life he and his family could use our prayers and best wishes.

It is with sadness that I amend the above post to say that Scott passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011, following his 5 year battle with cancer.

You can Google Scott Creelman obituary and several entries will appear.

Those of you who may remember him will remember him as a formidable baseball player, tennis player, and general all-around talented young man while at camp.

The Camp Wyanoke family will miss his deeply.

It is with sadness that I report the death of "Ricky" Friend following several very difficult months battling cancer. "Ricky" was a Midget in C-1 with me in 1949, so he is arguably my longest friend in the Wyanoke family. He was a camper for several years.

He retired to Tuftonboro several years ago and we would see each other frequently around the docks in downtown Wolfeboro.

I was notified today by Grant Hirst, a Wyanoker from the 40s and 50s, that another Wyanoker from that same era passed away in July 2011.

It is with deep sadness that I, belatedly, relate the death of David F. Bunting, Cambridge, MA, formerly of Melrose, and a Dartmouth Grad (1963), and a standout athlete at both Dartmouth and Wyanoke.

I extend my personal condolences to his family, and the condolences of Camp Wyanoke.

While at Wyanoke David was a regular on the podium following a track meet or a tennis match, and spent a lot of his waterfront time mastering sailing.

I am stunned, and can hardly form a coherent thought.

Sherry and I send our deepest condolences to Barbara and the rest of the family. And we send our condolences to Mike, and all who knew Garth.

This was a total shocker, but I can fully understand Mike's words about how Garth kept his personal health rather private.

I can't think of anything to say except that I know I will never forget Garth, and the impact he made at Wyanoke, and then on to a stellar career at Camp Agawam.

If anyone should rest in peace it should be Garth.

And it will be Garth. Thank you, Dave.

Here is the obituary composed by Garth's daughter Meredith, published Friday, July 12, 2013 in the Boston Globe and the Patriot Ledger:

Garth Robert Nelson

Garth Nelson of Hanover passed away unexpectedly on July 10, 2013. He is survived by his wife Barbara Nelson, daughter Meredith Mormile, son-in-law Richard Mormile, and grandson Jackson Mormile. He was preceded in death by his mother Lorraine Godfrey and her husband Walter Godfrey. He also leaves his brother-in-law Bill Daestch, sister-in-law Eileen Daetsch, and nieces Molly, Megan, and Erin.

Garth’s devotion to his family and friends and his remarkable contributions to youth development were the cornerstones of his life. A graduate of Winchester High School and the engineering program at Cornell University, Garth spent childhood and college summers at Camp Wyanoke and hiking the White Mountains with close friends, especially Mike Freeland, with whom his friendship spanned more than 50 years. Garth’s love of camp developed into a career in camping, culminating in 25 years as Camp Director of Camp Agawam in Raymond, Maine, and Executive Director of Agawam Council. One of Garth’s greatest gifts and greatest pleasures was mentoring campers from all walks of life. Garth’s achievement in the field of camping was honored by the Maine Youth Camping Foundation with the Halsey Gulick Award in 2011.

Come any soccer season, you could always find Garth coaching a team somewhere. He spent 32 seasons as the girls’ varsity soccer coach at Hanover High School, earning two state championships and numerous other titles and league championships. He was one of the founding coaches of Hanover Youth Soccer, and enjoyed many seasons coaching town and club teams.

With a keen intellect, quick wit, patient demeanor, and gentle spirit, Garth was exceptional in his roles as steady and loving husband, amazing dad, wonderful Gramps, best friend, and devoted coach and counselor. Guiding kids and celebrating their successes, big and small, was the joy of his life!

Visiting hours at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Rte. 53 in Hanover will be Saturday 4–7PM and Sunday 2–5PM. A funeral service will be on Monday 11AM at the First Congregational Church of Hanover, 547 Hanover St. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1909, Framingham MA 01701 or the Main Idea at Camp Agawam, Agawam Council (ref. Garth Nelson/Main Idea), 54 Agawam Road, Raymond ME 04071.

PostPosted: Thu Jun 12, 2014 10:41 am    Post subject: Passing of Gordon Kennington Reply with quote

It is with deep sadness that I post the death of Gordon Kennington, a Wyanoker from the late 1930's, and the Dad to Bob Kennington, a Wyanoker from more recent times. Bob is a frequent poster to this site.

Gordon (and subsequently Bob), lived at the end of Forest Road, near the Lakes Region Air Park, a spot we all visitied many times during Sunday afternoon "tent activities" time.

Personally, and on behalf of Camp Wyanoke, I extend my sympathies to Gordon's wife, Terri, and to his two children, Bob, and Joan.

PostPosted: Tue May 17, 2016 6:31 pm    Post subject: Death of Virginia Skelley Reply with quote

I am very sad to announce the Virginia "Gina" Bailey Skelley passed away late last week following a long and difficult illness.

Some of the (ahem) older members of this forum will undoubtedly remember spending time, sometimes a lot of time (not to mention $$), at Bailey's Restaurant just past the hospital in Wolfeboro. (I would mention Tom Falcon by name, but I don't want to spotlight any of his endeavors.)

"Gina' and her husband Al operated "Bailey's" taking over from her parents a number of years ago. Subsequently, one of their sons became the operator while Al ran the Dockside Restaurant on the dock in downtown Wolfeboro. Another son, and his wife, operated "Bailey's Bubble" downtown, also, so, if you were hungry in Wolfeboro, all you had to do was "go the Bailey's"!

None of the 4 Bailey sons were involved with Wyanoke, however, as a matter of family involvement, "Gina's younger brother, Lannie, and I spent many hours playing at the Carry Beach our first two summers of life since we are only 5 weeks apart.

I can speak for myself, and my Dad, when I say that "Gina" was one of the nicest ladies you would ever want to know. She will be missed.
