A popular family-run grocery store, Hunter's Shop 'n' Save, in downtown Wolfeboro was destroyed in a three-alarm fire last night. Hunter's was located on the north side of S. Main St. across from the marina. I'm guessing this was on the site or even in the building of the IGA(?) market there in the last decades of camp. No injuries have been reported. At least ten regional fire departments responded and successfully kept the fire from spreading to other buildings in the historic town.

Yes, the total-loss fire at Hunter's grocery store was quite an event. The Wolfeboro Fire/Rescue Department, supported by many additional Towns, did a fantastic job of containing the fire, and, at the same time, protecting the near-by buildings. An early-on decision to tear down the building in order to extinguish the fire was instrumental in saving the rest of the neighborhood.
The owner of Hunter's has said publicly that "We will be back". The clean-up effort involves asbestos, and this adds a whole layer of protocol to the activity of cleaning and clearing the site. Of course, the weather hasn't helped either, but I am sure that once he weather turns around it will be full-steam ahead to rebuild.
In the meantime, the "Hunter's Shoppers" have a choice of the other grocery store in Town, or going to other store out of Town. The remaining store, named Harvest Market, is trying its best to meet the needs, but it isn't too large, so there are times when it is crazy crowded. Plus, the internal lay-out is totally different than Hunter's, and this is causing shoppers to spend more time if only to find what they want. I am sure it is very trying time for the Harvest management, and I hope they get a handle on it in time for the summer influx of people.
The Hunter's fire drew nationwide-interest, probably through social media. I had not heard about it until I was on my way to early morning (7 AM) breakfast downtown and my sister from Washington State called me!
I guess it is safe to say that the up-side to it all is that no one was injured and no other buildings were involved. It is my understanding that ownership is being very good to the full-timers who have been effected. I don't know any details, I can only guess (based on very reliable sources).

This was Hunter's second fire. Probably the former 2017 fire was not too serious, as they gave away T-shirts with the message, "We're 'on fire' to help you". Confused

No T-shirts this time! Sad

Hunter's Shop 'n' Save reopened earlier in summer 2024:

Their website reports that they still have openings in the Meat department, experience preferred, but willing to train, for anyone looking for some extra $$$.
