For the length of time during which this web site has been active I have read many interesting posts and posted responses to specific and generic questions about Wyanoke, et al, however, one subject I have not addressed is my personal feelings about these posts. I can say, without reservation, that I am deeply humbled when I read comments about the impact of Wyanoke on people's lives. I can also say that I take it as a great testamony to my father and to my grandfather before him when I read anecdotes and specific events from many years ago which remain clear in Wyanoke minds today.
I could post some response to almost every post on this site, but that would be unnecessary. I have responded to some specific questions, and I have left other threads alone, purposely, because I felt they didn't need my response. Memories become subjective over time, and, generally, if the initial event was pleasant, the memories become more pleasant through time, and that is a good thing.
This Forum has allowed thoughts and memories to be expressed in writing and shared with all viewers, and this is too great a situation to fool with. I have seen one posting prompt others which draw on decade-old memories - what a great thing this is.
So, I want to say in conclusion that I, personally, having been a contemporary with all of you (in some capacity) stand humbled by the words of this site, and proud to be a part of it. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Great post, Dave! You'd have to devote 24/7 to reply to each post! Your comments are greatly appreciated and provide an insight and information that we rarely knew as campers.
One question I have is: Was it your mom that decided who won the parades each week? That's a question that lingers in my mind . I do remember Ken Wall being one of the West Point cadets that attended Camp and oversaw the parades when I was there. He must have been a Senior councilor at some point but forget which years without looking them up.
Dave, I very much appreciate your insight and reflections! As we age I believe that the Wyanoke experience comes more into focus and the profound value that it had and continues to have in each of our lives.
I always thought that our parents sent us away for the summer to get us out of their hair with nothing to do . . . . . speaking as an 11 year old! That may have, in part, been the case! Looking back, it's the best thing that they could have ever done! I'm just glad that there was a place called Wyanoke. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Question from Jim Culleton: Was it your mom that decided who won the parades each week?
No, there was a committee of judges, different staff members during the summer; however, Mrs. Bentley did present the color rosette to the flag bearer of the winning color at the end of the season.
I was the Blue company commander and I believe the Grays won the rosette (have to check with Peter Gilbert, Gray company commander that year).
I have a question for all of you: How many of you, as Aides, when going to Town Monday nights for the movie, slipped off the buss and went to the Casino instead (which was permitted for the JA's) ? I did, a couple of times. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Dave, you've got me on that one! Where was the "casino" located in Wolfeboro? I would have been an Aide in '60 and don't remember the casino nor anyone ever mentioning it. I'm sure that it would have been more fun than the movies. I do remember the "Pirates Den" on Wolfeboro Harbor. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

When you headed down into Wolfeboro, before you got to the main shopping area, there was a road off to the right that took you to the Casino. Alas, I was too young to have been a part of this - I don't know when the Casino closed up - but I was always envious of those who had the opportunity to go there. |
