What a great web site. I was telling old stories with my brother and thought,I wonder if there is anything on the web. Wow!! So much fun to see all the old pictures and read the memories.I was at camp from 1959 in c-1 with Gordy Peale, until 1966. The best camp in the history of all time.It had a huge impact on my life.Since then I spent my college years working at the C Lazy U Ranch in granby Colorado.A five star dude ranch that has been in my family for many years. There I became interested in the restaurant business and currently own and operate a small chain of restaurants in the Philadelphia suberbs with my brother Bob who was also a Wyanoker. I have been with him for the last 30 years. The food at camp was fabulous! I think that the creamed tuna on saltine crackers is still probably the best thing that I have ever eaten. Here is an old memory from the farewell banquets.Help me with this one. There was a trophy that was donated ever year for the camper who caught the biggest fish. It was a monster sized trophy, really spectacular. And from my first year on I dreamed of winning that thing. I was leading one year until the very last day with about an hour left and some junior beat me by about 2 ounces, with a perch no less!! I think that the trophy was donated by Wendy Carr -- the Wendy Carr fishing trophy. Am I right _________________ Rick Bales |

Greetings! Rick, and welcome. You're one for two by my count. It was indeed the Wendy Carr Fishing Trophy.
But the Creamed Tuna was about my least favorite dish served there. You coulda had mine... in fact, you probably did. I've had a general aversion to canned tuna ever since my days at Wyanoke largely because of Creamed Tuna.
And it may be the "best camp of all time", but I'd have to sing "It's the finest camp in all the world...", but that's just nitpicking.
Do you remember the name of the dude ranch that was located north of downtown Wolfeboro on 109?
Yup, podner, it was the Allen -A- Resort. Looks on the web like it's gone, though there now seems to be an Allen -A- Motor Inn Motel, in a different location northwest of downtown on 109 halfway to the left turn onto Forest Road. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

Welcome to the Wyanoke site, Rick! We're glad that you found us. I'm sure that you and I have met although I was a Senior in '59. My brother Dick was a Midget in '59 so I'm sure that you know him.
I remember that fishing trophy and it was big . . . . . . . bigger than the fish we caught most of the time. I'm sure that Dave Bentley would know who donated it.
Ahh yes . . . . . creamed tuna and saltines! That was a pretty decent meal and a bit more substantial than the Welsh Rabbitt (Rarebit) we used to have and which I liked as well. Both recipes included saltines! _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Welcome to the site, Rick, we are all glad to have additional memories added to the mix.
Yes, DA, the dude ranch is gone, and the Allen-A- Motor Inn is basically across the street from where it was. It is actually on Rt 28 N. From downtown Wolfeboro you would head up the hill to the blinking light by Brewster Field, turn left (which would sort of be east or north) and proceed about 3 miles. Rt 109 is verbally North Main Street going past Forest Road, except that is also runs coincidentally with Rt 28 past the Motel after which is turns sort of south and becomes Rt 109 E heading cross country to Rt 16. If everyone is sufficiently confused I'll stop this explanation.
Now, come on, any one who did military service knows that creamed tuna over saltines is NO WORSE that some of the creamed stuff over something we were served in the field and during basic training. What about stewed tomatoes (yummy in the tummy) or an eight year old trying to understand his councilor's version of the esoteric value of eating prunes at 7:45 AM. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Oh, okay, well that's cool, but the reason I thought it was where I said it was was that I got a bum steer from a website. I must be the only person that ever happened to, because everybody knows that if it's on the web, it's true, especially on Internet maps. Here's the map I found that showed it closer to the camp property:
http://www.travelpost.com/hotels/Allen_A_Motor_Inn/h53356
There's probably a really nice house at that location, and boy, are those owners in for a surprise when guests with reservations at the Allen -A- show up and unload suitcases on their front porch and ask when dinner is served. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

Well, DA, you have done what few have done before you, you are both completely correct and completely wrong simultaneously, and it is not your fault. The map is pictorially wrong, the address is verbally right. Interestingly enough, the map is also verbally wrong in that it lists Rt 108 as Bassett Rd, another error on their part. Quite conceivably, someone could follow this map, end up at the wrong place, not be able to recover from the mistake, and clearly meet themself coming and going. Ah, a thought comes to mind - this map was drawn for tourists from Massachusetts, and they actually find the map to be dead on accurate, right in line with all their experiences in eastern Massachusetts these past many years (can you say Big Dig, pronounced 'personal flotation device" ? _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Ahh yes the Allen A. I remember driving by it (or being driven by it) all the time. There are only two things I can remember clearly: first are the shuffleboard, um, things (what do you call a shuffleboard thing? a court?) visible from the road, with geriatrics (I should talk) languidly pushing the pucks from one end nearly to the other. The second is what I still consider one of the dumbest slogans I've ever seen, proudly painted on their sign: "The Camp with the Excellent Bathing Beach".
Oh yeah, welcome aboard Rick. Would you be interested in divulging the name of your restaurant(s)? Pat, my brother if you recall (well, even if you don't recall) and his wife Vicki, live in Cornwall Pa, maybe an hour away from you. Maybe they'd drop by, hopefully with me in tow, for a luncheon one day (see my Baloney Sandwich with Water and Orange recipe elsewhere in this forum - maybe something you could add to the menu). _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mike, we have three restaurants in the Abington,Colmar and Feasterville areas. We just changed the name to WingWalker Pubs, formerly Inn Flight Steak and Seafood Grills.I sure do remember Pat and would be honored to have you guys here for a nice lunch or dinner. David, you and my brother Bob were good friends in cabintown _________________ Rick Bales |

I think I remember the Allen A but I clearly remember going by a place called Market in the Pines. It didn't get much funnier that that for a Junior Camp camper! I also remember a motel that advertised split level parking, we could never figure out why that would be a big draw. _________________ 1965-1975
