I was out last weekend camping with my familly and having flashbacks of Wyanoke when a thought ran through my mind. I do not recall ever seeing anyone cutting grass at Wyanoke. Could someone fill me in on who did it and when? _________________ 1965-1975

Freddie Nichols, who never seemed to break a sweat, walked behind a rotary mower, dressed in long pants and usually a short-s;eeved shirt. Not often, I'd say, but I think he did that to trim things up for visitors or something. The grass never seemed to grow very long either, now that you mention it. It's funny that you bring that up, because it wasn't more than a few days ago that I conjured up an image of Freddie mowing the ball field.
You may not remember this either: He used to take care of high weeds with one of several scythes he had hanging in the shop, which he sharpened on a pedal-powered wheel. I used to sharpen the axes on that stone. That was well before string-trimmers. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Afternoon Folks:
I remember mowing the ballfield on a few occasions. Not sure if it was when I was an Aide or a J.A.
We were given some nasty 21" gas mower. "Push variety".
It would be interesting to hear from Dave B. on what kind of upkeep the ballfield received. Was it fertilized, overseeded etc. etc.
I got a bit carried away a few years back and expanded my lawn a wee bit.
It takes me 3 hours to mow , and that's with a 52" walkbehind.
Like Chris and Mike...I have also thought about mowing the ballfield in recent times. |
