I saw Bob Arnot's name a few times on the rosters. I'm not sure whether Bob eventually became a physician or a news caster or BOTH, but none the less a commentator on one of the TV news networks, CBS, ABC or NBC. I used to see him quite a bit 10-15 years ago but have not seen him on TV lately.
I'm thinking that it's the same Bob Arnot, but not sure. His pic from the gallery and a recent one of him sure do look similar but with a little age. I'm sure that Dave Bentley would know. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

WOOPS! I was responding to Tom Shirley's post about famous folks that attended Wyanoke under "Camp Rosters" and mistakenly created a new post, but that's OK. Maybe we can add some other "famous" folks!
Sorry about that Tom, my original comment should have been posted under your "Camp Rosters" post. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

I like your title better.
I didn't realize that was the same Bob Arnot. I think he was a counselor while I was there. _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

Yep, same Bob Arnot. I always get the networks confused, so I may be wrong here as to his network affiliation. He was referred to as "Dr. Bob Arnot" and had a segment on Good Morning America (was that CBS or ABC?) for quite a while. Then he became, and I think still is, CBS's chief medical correspondent. He's traveled to some seriously bad-ass places like Mogadishu, where Americans' life spans are measured in minutes. Quite a career, though medical more on the periphery. I don't think he ever practiced privately.
He was a great trumpet player and even did a stint as bugler when he was an Aide or JA. We had a brass quartet at Wyanoke with me ('bone), Bob Arnot (Trumpet), Pat (Baritone) and Ray Hillyard (French Horn). We weren't too bad -- played that intro to "God of our Fathers" for Walt Scheirer more than once.
Another famous guy was Samuel Barber, composer. He was pre-1940 so you won't find him in the rosters I shot. I think he wrote "Up in New Hampshire's Hills" (so... it's... Rah! Rah! for Wyanoke).
Speaking of Aides, remember Tom Falcon or Steve Downes or someone after lunch calling for a meeting with the Office Aides, the Dining Hall Aides, Waterfront Aides and the Band-Aides? He was told that the announcement time was not a time for levity. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Speaking of famous people. My sister in law(wifes sister) is Pat Richardson(Jill on Home Improvement). I had many fine years watching her grew in show business and I got to meet, talk to and have dinner next to many well known stars. It was a thrill to go to many tapings and go back stage and BS with the stars. A real highlight in my life.Just thought that I would throw that in for S&G. Rick _________________ Rick Bales |

Great story, Rick! I'm gonna have to watch that show more closely. Now all I need to do is meet Rachael Ray on the Food Network or that guy on the Travel Channel that eats all that exotic food from all corners of the world. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

I used to see Dr. Bob on TV for several years. He was on CBS first for a couple of years then was with NBC/MSNBC. During that time I bought a fitness/diet book that he had written, in it he mentions spending summers at Camp Wyanoke in Wolfboro NH. I was stunned when I read that. I had a thought of sending him an email or something but I never did. If I find the book again I'll post the title.
Here it is: Dr. Bob Arnot's Guide to Turning Back the Clock. Copyrighted 1995. Published by Little Brown and Company.
On page 19 the quote goes: ""Hey Yo! You out in left field. Move a little farther left" I did as the coach instructed me in baseball. Another boy moved into the main left field position for practicw at Camp Wyanoke in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire."
Has anybody attempted to contact him of late? _________________ Marc

Rick, funny you should mention "Drive-Ins, Diners and Dives" a great show on the Food Network! I saw an episode about a month ago that featured "The Red Arrow Diner" in Manchester, NH. The food there is supposed to be fantastic although I have not been there as yet. One of their homemade recipes is their "American Chop Suey". There are links within their website for the Food Network pics and their visit this past April.

I'm certainly gonna have to visit this place on my next trip to NH! It's only about 1.5 hours give or take south of Wolfeboro on I-93. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Hey Marc,
Dr. Bob Arnot-- who now bills himself as "Dr. Danger", a thrill-seeking, world-traveling adventurer-- appears on a current show by that name airing on MOJO HD (formerly INHD), a cable and satellite TV channel that high definition subscribers get. It's pretty cool. Bob hasn't aged much at all.
He came to the camp reunion at Pat Freeland's house in 1989, and still seemed the same great guy we knew at camp. He comes across that way on TV, too, still. But if you check out his biography, you'll see lots of emphasis on world travel, overseas humanitarian work, and TV reporting, experiences which have probably have him feeling different at least from his camp identity:
http://www.boomertowne.com/webcasts/celebrity_experts_bio.aspx?cid=11
I don't remember him being the adrenaline rush seeker at camp that he "plays" now on TV.
There's a contact link there ("Ask Dr. Bob"):
http://www.boomertowne.com/focus-on-you/askdrbob.aspx?sid=33
Whether Bob actually reads everything sent there personally, or whether somebody screens them and just picks out a few general questions to share with Bob, I don't know, so I'm not sure you can contact him that way, but it's worth a shot. _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

Although in no way related to Camp Wyanoke, Wolfeboro has been host (not officially) to the present President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, who is vacationing, with members of his family, at the 23,000+ sq ft, $30,000.00/week, home of a retired Micro Soft executive. I have been in the home, and, believe me, it is beautiful, plus a fabulous boat house, dock, and private beach.
Mr. Sarkozy and his wife and other family members, plus an entourage of Secret Service, and any other agency you can think of, have been walking around Town almost daily, visiting and buying in local stores, dining in local restaurants, having ice cream, the whole tourist thing. Rumors abound that President Bush will visit him, here, while he is here, but this remains a super secret as to the veracity of the rumor.
I was down town and he passed me quite closely as he went between stores. Although I am not an academically literate conversant about geopolitics, and, frankly, I have no opinion regarding the French in general, it is a bit of a thrill to be in the close proximity of a world leader, even briefly and anonymously.
The Town is full of the security-type, all talking into their wrists and trying to blend into the people-scape of the tourist season.
I wonder if he would like some bug juice, or, better yet, a piece of Mrs. Morin's chocolate cake with a thick layer of white icing?
So, he didn't go to Camp, and he has no idea what Camp Wyanoke is, but he did at least make it to Wolfeboro. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

In a similar vein Dave, Pat alerted me to an article in the Boston Glob last Sunday by Lisa Wangsness, headlined "Romney is one of the regulars at N. H. retreat" sub "Has quiet life in Wolfeboro".
In it she says that Rudy Giuliani and a noticable entourage were milling around Bailey's Bubble shaking babies and kissing hands and getting ice cream. A few hours after he left with a flourish, Mitt Romney was at the same place, with only his wife and some kids or grandkids. No one really recognized him.
That brings up a burning global socio-political question: What's Bailey's Bubble? That's not the old Dockside (which will always be its name in my book), is it? _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Many Wolfeboro eateries have been bought and sold. Bailey's is now Morrissey's Front Porch restaurant just down Main Street from Kingswood H.S. The original building is still being used. Bailey's way back when had a small satellite "walk-up" ice cream stand on Main Street adjacent to the post office called "Bailey's Bubble". I think it's now just called "The Bubble" without the Bailey's name. I'll have to check the next time I'm up.

"Dockside" was once owned by Bailey's but believe it has changed ownership and now is owned by the Town of Wolfeboro. I still love the sandwiches at the Wolfeboro Inn! Great sandwiches at a reasonable price. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

|

Okay, before the information gets too out of reality, here is the story on Bailey's and Dockside and the Bubble.
Allan Bailey and his wife started Bailey's on South Main street, and it grew by additions until it reached what most of us know as Bailey's. They had 2 children - Virginia, the older of the two, married Allan Skelley, and they eventually owned and ran Bailey's. Allan Jr., the younger child, owned and operated the Lake Motel, almost directly behind Bailey's Restaurant. He was also involved in several other businesses in Wolfeboro, but never with Bailey's Restaurant. Allan and Virginia Skelley (and the name Skelley was often confused with Bailey, especially with both males named Allan) have 4 sons, all of whom worked in the restaurant for varying lengths of time and at different periods of time. Eventually, son Rick and his wife Maria bought out the parents and they ran the restaurant for quite a few years.
During all this time that the parents (Virginia and Allan) ran Bailey's, they also ran Dockside, using a manager. The Dockside building is owned by the Town of Wolfeboro, and is leased to whomever submits the best bid, generally for a 3 year period, with options to renew and extend. They ran Dockside for 20 years and then decided not to bid on the renewal.
During the later years that the parents (Virginia and Allan) ran Bailey's, their son Chip (Allan Jr) and his wife opened and ran the Bailey's Bubble. This was a two-window ice cream walk-up, no food. Chip was primarily employed by a local market in the meat department, and his wife was a physical education teacher in the local district and coach of the girls field hockey team. Her connections to the talent/labor pool of capable young women insured she always had plenty of help. Also, her coaching networking, her personal family tree (a large local family), several in-laws from large local families, all this combined to insure a built in customer base.
After several years of being employed by day in the meat market, and working at night with his wife at the Bubble, Chip bought a gas station/convenience store 15 miles north of Town on Rt 109. He quit the meat cutters job and threw himself into this new venture, working day and night to clean it up, restock with what people wanted, hiring good people, and, OF COURSE, selling Bailey's ice cream and developing a take-out food business.
One of the sons is in Buffalo, NY and is not a player.
The fourth son lives in Wolfeboro, was involved with all three activities, but is now involved with a cell tower company.
The son and wife owning Bailey's Restaurant,Rick and Maria, sold a few years ago to Aaron and Patty Morrissey. Aaron was involved with the Wolfeboro Inn, and Patty is in the school system. Patty's parents and married sister live in Town which has helped establish a network for them.
So, today, August 8, 2007, you have one Bailey grandson (Chip Skelley) and his wife, Debby, owning and operating the Bailey's Bubble, and also Skelley's Market (described above). Rick and Maria are out of the restaurant business; Doug and Sheila are involved with the cell tower business; and David and his wife are in Buffalo, NY in education somewhere.
The Dockside restaurant went through several lease holders, all bad to worse, and finally a family in Town picked up the lease and has done great things to bring it back to a viable waterfront eatery. Actually, I think the lease may be in the name of a restaurant owned by this family.
The name "Bailey's" has great name recognition and sticking power; however, it was a condition of sale that the name not be transferred.
I may have missed a detail or two, but this is the main idea. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

I agree. The Wolfeboro Inn has changed hands just recently, and is scheduled to close for two months for "remodeling". (Not what I'd want to change, but that's just me).
I called yesterday to see just which months they intend to close, and they said "nothing has been announced".
Also the Lakeview Inn, which had superb dinners just seven years ago, is on the market for sale. _________________ Gordon B. (Father) Wyanoke ~1929-1937
