Greetings fellow campers!
I enjoy fly tying, and the last few years have been tying the classic bass flies of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. In addition, I tie flies of my own creation in that style. This is one such fly. The blue and grey reminded me of Wyanoke, so that's the name I chose. I hope you enjoy seeing this modest tip of the hat to our great camp. Cheers, Alec

I also like to fish and I am willing to propose a contest. Let’s see who can catch the largest fresh water game fish, caught in the US, between now and next October. The contest is open to anyone on the forum except the moderator who will be the judge. (Sorry Mike no fishin for you this year.) We will rely on each others honor as Wyanoke alumni to be truthful.

I will send the winner a batch of home made brownies.

Nice pictures guys! I never knew that Winnipesaukee housed such large perch! That one sure is a whopper, Bob! It certainly deserves a spot over there at the Libby Museum off of Rt. 109 near Mirror Lake!

I don't remember his name but there was a Jr. Camp councilor one summer during the late 50's who was a avid fly tyer. I believe he was in J-16 and actually started a new activity called fly tying. Fly tying had not been a recognized activity before then if I'm not mistaken. I'll have to check the rosters.

I remember the fly-tying!! Jim, could that have been Gunnar Engstrom, the Italian guy who also carved ball-in-cage things from blocks of pine? Locked knee.

I remember Gunnar, Mike. Great guy and a great fly tyer! But there was another councilor, I think, that ate & slept fly tying that one year. He would sit out on the doorway of J-16 and was ALWAYS fly tying, drawing kids over to watch his latest creation. He probably fly tied in his sleep. Once I get a chance to look at the rosters I hope to come up with his name. Maybe it was Gunnar?

OK, J-16 (the cabin) was seldom used, and in '58 and '59, Pete Sawin was the councilor in there. I know it wasn't Pete. The little white cabin was also, and more often, designated J-12, and here's who was in J-12 and when:

'60 - Ted Phoenx or Scott Kent. It was neither of them, right? Nope.
'58 - Stephen Matthews. I don't remember him. I was a Midget.
'57 - William McFadden. That's too early.

J-16: Other than Pete Sawin, Rich Rimbach was councilor in J-16 in '56. Again too early.

Now Gunnar was in J-1 in '59 and '60, then went to Cabintown in '61, Head Councilor there in '62. I'm beginning to think it wasn't Gunnar now, but I sure do remember the fly-tying. We campers called it Tie Flying, of course.

Are you sure it was the councilor in J-16? I'm starting to get ancient vibes that the cabin was empty, and was therefore a perfect place to set up delicate vises and feathers and threads without goober interference in the off hours, and it could be locked.

This is a good one! I bet Dave B. remembers, or Bob Vaughan. Pat even.

Minor correction there Bob. It was Pete Sawin.

Yeah, 1960 was "interesting" summer. I was 13, and in S-8 with Dick Leavitt, who was abruptly replaced by Dave Hemphill. Too Bad. A lot of good guys left that summer.

So, back to the question: Was the fly tying guy the councilor in J-12/16, or was the empty cabin just used for the activity? I'm thinking the latter, but can't think of who was the fly-tier.

Hey Tom,

In a nutshell, here's the story of the summer of 60. No point in bringing up names because I can't remember enough of them. You can figure out who was involved by looking at the roster and noting the tents/cabins where two councilors are listed.

One night about mid-summer that year, six councilors from Wyanoke decided to execute a "panty raid" at Kehonka. Thinking about that even now, I wonder how you'd pull that off (pardon the unintentional pun), but I guess it would involve not only trespassing on the property after dark, but going near or into their cabin(s). These were young guys and certainly didn't have any malice intended - just a prank.

I guess their presence created a bit of a commotion, because they didn't get away with it. Whether they got nabbed on Kehonka property or had a not-pleased BMB waiting for them when they returned to camp, I don't know. Part of the problem (as I understand it) was that the Ballentines and the Bentleys purportedly had a rather flinty relationship, though by no means hostile, which didn't make matters any better for the "six of '60". I was only 13 at the time, and the incident was virtually never spoken of (intresting, because even among the councilors, gossip wasn't often tolerated (RCES excepted, and I WON'T get into that one)). Maybe the remaining staff were told that if they breathed a word, they'd join the others on the bus. I don't know. However, through the years, the impression I got was that the Ballentines were quite willing to prosecute those guys, and were forestalled by negotiations from BMB which had them all off the camp property before reveille the next morning. Must've been a terribly long night for Brad.

As campers, the only thing we were told was that something personal had happened which caused some of the councilors to have to make a hasty departure. It was fodder for a LOT of after-Taps speculation. When I found out what had really happened, I felt really sorry for those guys because it all seemed so harmless. On the other hand, the camps are in charge of hundreds of other people's kids, and that roll was never compromised neither by Kehonka nor Wyanoke. There wasn't really any other choice.

It's still not talked about much. It doesn't seem like much of an incident now, but it sure was then. An awful lot of water has flowed under the bridge in the last 48 years, so I don't feel so bad about telling the tale. If I have any details wrong or left anything out, anyone who knows better should pipe up.

As I remember, every one of those guys was terrific -- great councilors, good with the kids, well liked and they loved Wyanoke. There was nothing evil about them or their intent. Just a youthful dumb decision.

I never got caught for the decisions I made like that. And there were plenty.
