Looking back at the years I went to Winnemont, one of the distinctive memories is the way we sang in the dining room, sang at campfires, did singing skits, and that music was a constant and fun part of the camp experience. I went from 1956-62? I think, and had a great time. I still hike, and wish I could thank Don Duncan for his great leadership of the trips. Does anyone know his whereabouts?

Thanks for the first post, a2harris.

Look at this link. Came up in a google search. Recognize them?

It always struck me as funny that Winnemonters could sing at meals, and at Wyanoke it was strictly prohbited. One does NOT sing at the table." I remember visiting my cousin Suzie and being stunned by the singing. Unheard of! Blasphemous! Not the way WE do it!

Speaking of songs, I posted the following on an archived thread in the Winnipesaukee forum a few days ago, but I think that thread's dead.

Those cheers and songs from Laurel (another poster in the Winnie Forum) reminded me of some long-ago memories. This from my Mom, a Winnemonter in the '30s (Catherine Kreider, now deceased):

Oh I'm a hayseed
My hair is seaweed
And my ears are made of leather
And they flop in rainy weather.
Gosh-a-hemlock
Tough as a pine knot
I'm from Winnemont you see.

Anybody remember that one? And Miss Baldwin?

Remember the Wyanoke/Winnemont dances back in the early 60s? I may have met, or even danced with some of you. If you've ever been at one of those dances, you might recall the absolutely overpowering smell of Noxema and Burma Shave shaving cream and gallons of Old Spice and Brut. I don't think a lot of that saving cream was really necessary now that I think of it. In any case, that's the best our bathroom/shower room below the Chapel ("the Pines") smelled all summer.

Yes, I knew the one on the right as Lindsay Dann, and we went to school together in Delaware, at Wilmington Friends School. Amazing what you can uncover on the web!

I vaguely remember all the excitement over the dances, but am not sure I participated..I think it was more for the older kids.

Welcome Winnemonters and thanks Mike for including a post section for our sister camp! I can certainly remember 2 Winnemont/Wyanoke dances that I attended in the Boyden Chapel and perhaps even a 3rd one at Winnemont. Needless to say they were a lot of fun once everyone got up from their chairs and started dancing.

If I remember the guys were lined up on the left side of the chapel and the gals on the right at the start. Forgot who was serving the "punch" . . . . . probably a small group from Phil's dining hall group, or who played the records? We didn't have DJ's I don't think, nor cassette players in the very early 60's. Geez 8-tracks were barely on the horizon!

Ah, yes . . . . the Noxema, Old Spice & Brut! Can't forget the Canoe and English Leather! Yes, the Senior Pines never smelled so good!

I forget who was the Winnemont director at the time. But didn't she and Mrs. Bentley act as referees to make sure we didn't get too close on any particular dance? Maybe it was just my imagination! Laughing

I am picturing a face (from 47 yrs ago, mind you) that I think goes with the name Ziggy! Can't find it in my Winnemont catalogs(I have about 4 or 5 of them, 1956-63), but maybe I will.

As to songs, yes, I remember both the Hayseed one, and many others. No Man Is An Island (maybe in more liberated days we would have adapted it for women...) but it was a good song, anyway. Winnemont Forever, we're the green and the white, we climb the highest mountains, and fight the hardest fights! Hurrah for Winnemont, Along the way we're (singing, hiking, something) and in every fight,, 3 cheers for Winnemont & the green and the white! Just think of how many brain cells have been cluttered up with Winnemont songs for so long. My mother, born in 1918 visited Winnemont as a child but never attended...I think she may have taught me the Hayseed one, so it could be early Winnemont. I'm glad in its current life as a family camping place people are still enjoying it, the old sailboats, canoes, and rowboats.

"Mrs. Paris (the cook), Mrs. Paris, we are singing, your praises ringing...we will never, find your equal, Mrs. Paris, here's to you!" I have a picture of her in the kitchen with about 30 pies in front of her.

Hi, Winnemonters and Wyanokers! I just found this while surfing and was fortunate to connect with Mike Freeland who was kind enough to hand me the keys to the kingdom, so to speak! I worked with Mrs. Paris in the kitchen in the summers of '57 and '58. Made some good friends and miss those times. Name back then was Ginger Hinett. Would love to reconnect with some of you.
