I don't remember what year this was, but I think I was a fairly new councilor, so mid-60s. Seems right.

BMB was in his usual rocking-chair position on the Little Guest House porch, maybe during Quiet Hour, when a nasty dust-up broke out between a couple of boys. A councilor was there quickly and he broke it up and sent them on their ways. BMB called the councilor over and asked what that was all about. One of the kids had called the other a faggot.

At the next council meeting, Brad mentioned the incident, cautioned us to be watchful, and then added "I still don't understand why a boy would be so upset at being called a bundle of sticks".

Oh, for those days again!

Digression:

First snow of the season is spitting here on the plains in Colorado. The mountains, a few miles west of me, are expected to get a foot or so. Arapahoe Basin is already open for skiing. Any of you pass through Denver on the way to the slopes? Need a place to stay a night free, including a simulation of the bar at the Wolfeboro Inn? Let me know.

Hey, thanks for the invite, but personally, I'd rather be joining these guys up on the summit of Mt. Washington this afternoon, enjoying the views of the splendid New Hampshire fall foliage:

Summit Conditions – 5:15 PM, Sun.
Temp 26.6°F
Wind 296° (NW) 65.9 mph
Wind Gust 69.0 mph
Wind Chill 4.6°F

Hey, it's only 5:15pm. Still a couple of hours before dark to run over to Madison Hut and spend the night.

I was going to post this under "Master Activity Score Board" but decided that it fits better here.

Wow, I think back about the responsibilities we had as JC's and Councilors in dealing with such activities as riflery, archery! The "kids" we were teaching were kids, but we were also barely early-mid teenagers in most cases when we were teaching these classes. Our mom's thought we were still "kids"!

We were very fortunate back in those late 50's/early 60's days that, to my knowledge, we never had an accident either on the rifle nor archery range and I never gave it too much thought when teaching riflery in CabinTown. We obviously taught the rules and observed Camp policy but I don't remember ever being "certified" to teach riflery by the NRA back then but I may be wrong. There was a sense of "right/wrong" and responsibility back then that allowed us to learn without harm being done to anyone. Wyanoke had to have had an exceptional safety record in all activity areas.

So what's changed today in our schools, homelife, society? I wonder if we would even be teaching riflery today at Wyanoke? I will be 62 next month and I wonder how many lead painted toys I played with as a kid! Getting hit by a BB, arrow or 22 was the furthest thing from my mind back then . . . . . . and probably from most kid's minds back then.

Just some memories of more Innocent Times! Cherish them!

During the Summer of '63 my mom let me use her '61 Chevy Kingswood Station Wagon for most of the Camp season. I usually parked it in the "Midget" parking lot which would only house 3 cars at most and was only an entrance a few feet from Forest Road! Never an arrow did I see from the Midget Archery Range! Kudos to the archery instructor in '63! Was it Jeff Fincun? Not sure! Laughing

Innocent Times!

Hey Jim, I think it might have been Jeff Fincun. Was he the guy that chewed bubble gum 24/7?

I believe that you are right about Jeff. He always seemed to be chewing a wad of gum! In checking the Roster for 1963 a couple of things came to light. Dr. Bob Arnot was the bugler that summer. You, Jeff, Larry (my brother) and I were all JC's in Cabintown. I had forgotten about that.
