June 6, 2008

Weather: Hot, Damn Hot in Phoenix. It was 105 today and it's going to get warmer.

Activities of the day: Got up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head...went to work. I'd rather be running down the Jr. path towards the warf to go swimming.

Do the log books from past summers still exist? Dave do you have them? As we enter the summer months it would be fun to have one or two logs either scanned or typed in the post and revisit days gone by. It was always enjoyable to listen to the log for the day, which I think was read at the end of vespers at least twice weekly.

T.F.T.D. For those of us who were at Wyanoke for any length of time the laughter of campers and the camaraderie of fellow councilors will forever resonate in our hearts.

Hi Jim,

Alas, I'm given to understand that most of the log books were discarded shortly after camp closed. There were a LOT of them, and I guess you can't hang onto everything.

At least one must still exist, because I was able to get this log for July 16, 1968 by Charlie Thomas to put in the "Snapshot History" TDF, Mrs. Bentley and I put together for the 1995 reunion in Wolfeboro. Tom might have it, but I don't remember

Interesting that "Candy Line" was AFTER supper rather than after the traditional lunch or mid-day meal during quiet hour (afternoon siesta). Was there a change to the candy line schedule after I left in '64? Perhaps there wasn't dessert after the evening meal on this particular day? Laughing

Great to see the "Respectfully Submitted" finale still being used in '68 for the daily logs.

Yes, by 1968, there was often a candy line on Tuesday night, because Tuesday night was movie night in the Chapel, and boys were allowed to take a candy line to the movie.

That ended in 1969 when the Wyanoke Film Selection committee made the unfortunate choice of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, starring Don Knotts, and the camp's movie screen became pelted with half-chewed Goobers, an Animal House style food-fight started by JAs rebelling against bad film. Who were those irresponsible jerks that summer, anyway???
/just kidding about that 1969 food-fight part... there was no such event, and Tuesday night candy line continued, IIRC, to the end of camp... as did the tradition of "Respectfully Submitted,..."

I miss Charlie, author of that log. What a great guy... highly admired and respected by Wyanokers in his brief time there. I hope he's alive and well, spreading his zest for life somewhere.

Dave,
Are you sure you have the year right? 1969 was prior to my first year at camp and I remember candylines on movie night. Of course my memories has been playing tricks on me more and more often as time goes on.

This is a bit off-topic here, but speaking of Charlie Thomas, wasn't it he who did that skit where Brad gave him (Charlie) the heirloom pocket watch for a magic trick? Charlie wrapped the watch in a handkerchief, then smashed it with a rock. The watch, however, did not magically reassemble itself as promised, and BMB was devastated. His fahthah had given him that watch and it was irreplaceable! Nope, all a ruse, but BMB and Charlie had all of us completely convinced (well, I speak for myself -- I bought it hook, line and bobber). I remember that BMB felt bad about it afterwards because it was difficult at the end of it to convince some of the younger kids that it actually was a joke.

If that wasn't Charlie, then never mind. In any case it was a memorable sketch at an indoor campfire.

I'll always remember Charlie for saying "I return to life a hoppy mon" in that neat Gambian accent. Was that the same skit?

Charlie was indeed a gem.

Look at the post again, Tom. As I said there, I was just kidding that Tuesday night candy line was suspended after 1969-- that whole incident never happened, though I do recall Limpet being shown one very unfortunate night, and if any film would have inspired a food fight, that one's a good possibility.

Yes, I think Charlie did do that watch skit, but I think it was done more than once in my years. I think Peter Ellis might have done it one year, and/or Justin O'Connor, as older campers. BMB played the straight man role perfectly each time, expressing concern about the watch and then doing a slow burn after the smashed watch was revealed. (I wonder where they got the busted watch?)
