I hope this won't take anything away from this wonderful site but for anyone who is on Facebook I have created a Camp Wyanoke Group.

Note: Just found that Willson Beebe had already created one. I'll delete mine. Join his if you have a mind to.

Nothing against Face Book, Tom, but Face Book has experienced a number of hacker/virus intrusions lately. I refuse to use Face Book and would rather converse on our Wyanoke.com website. Why hasn't BeeBe joined Wyanoke.com? Seems sort of funny that some want to set up their own site but yet dismiss Wyanoke.com.

Thanks,

Jim

You guys are right, I didn't know about it. I've joined and will be posting some photos, etc., when I get the chance. Just be aware that Facebook is a great opportunity to redirect people to the Wyanoke site - I wouldn't dismiss it so quickly...

Hi Willson, welcome aboard.

Since we started this thing in 2004 or thereabouts, the number of registerd users, both from Wyanoke and Winnemont, has slowly but steadily increased, as has our content. Far as I can tell, most of our members found us through Google, after thinking "Hmm. I wonder what ever happened to Wyanoke" and ran a search. It took a while, but we finally floated to the top of the Google search results for Wyanoke. The site has succeeded in reuniting some old friends/tentmates/councilors/campers who haven't seen each other in decades. That's what makes it all worthwhile.

People seem to join up in little clusters -- someone finds us and tells someone else he's still in contact with etc.

However it happens, I'm always delighted to hear from anyone connected with the Wyanoke family, and if your Facebook thing (what's that called?) lures more people into our lair, you have my gratitude. And, of course, any pictures or documents or memorabilia you have to contribute, is enthusiastically welcome.

Mike

Welcome, Willson. I bet most people do find this website from Google, just searching "camp wyanoke" to see if there happen to be any websites that mention camp. Most alums are probably quite surprised when they first discover there's an online community devoted to camp here. I bet few people find it by typing "www.wyanoke.com", and those who do probably didn't expect to find this. "www.campwyanoke.com" goes nowhere. My point is, it's not surprising that Willson didn't know this site was here until Tom called it to his attention.

Jim, I think the widely reported dangers with facebook and myspace have come not from browsing there, but from downloading applications, and from putting personal data online on one's own page there, which can lead to targeted phishing attacks which seem safe because they're addressed personally to and know things about the target:
http://www.livemint.com/2008/04/29094957/Social-networking-applications.html
http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/security/0,39044215,62032807,00.htm

I personally wouldn't post my own page on facebook or myspace, with data about me-- and by the way, posting a page there and keeping it "private" may not shield one from phishing attacks, depending what you unwittingly agree to in the way of sharing, when you sign up-- nor would I download an app from either site. But I don't think it's more unsafe than most other sites to just browse there, or interact with someone you know through the website.

Truth is, any site can be a vector for a security attack if, for example, a flash applet displaying on a page has been hacked, and security software only has a partial chance to flag that. It's getting nasty out there. I have my eye on Freeland. He's always been a vaguely shady character. Wink
