Root beer barrels, anyone? Laughing

Now this will be a mind-jogger for all of us but Candy Line was something we always looked forward to as campers.

During my Wyanoke years Candy Line was usually offered 2-3 times per week with designated campers (Aides?) WALKING to each tent and cabin with the assortment for that day. CabinTown always seemed to be last on the list with a measly assortment of stuff no one else wanted! Maybe during the later years campers went to the camp store for candy line?? Was their ever a "Double Candy Line" . . . . . . . twice in one day . . . maybe just a dream?? Candy Line two days in a row was a real treat along with the powdered sugar donuts on Sunday mornings!

Add to the list of your favorite candy line choices! Hey, the root beer barrels at Black's were so much bigger!

Wow, another thing I forgot about (Jeeze, what old forgotten pleasures still await??)! Cabintown was always last, and the only thing left were Necco Wafers and Pep-o-Mint lifesavers. No self-respecting 8-yr-old would eat either of those. They improved your breath.

Candy Line was after lunch on Tuesdays and Saturdays, right?

In-tent candy lines came on rainy days, as I remember, but I have a vague recollection of guys delivering the candy to the Juniors before Cabintown. At some point though, the Juniors and Seniors were allowed to stand in line at the Store (Dave 'n' Bob's Company Store, where the REAL camp profits were made, and employee salaries nearly reached triple digits) to make their choices, and the Midgets finally got a decent selection.

Never any twice-in-one-day candy lines as I remember, but the one on Tuesday was postponed from after lunch to after dinner, to more closely simulate the theater-going experience for the Tuesday Night Movie. (Jason and the Argonauts was my favorite).

And sometimes there was a "Free Candy line", but I don't remember if that meant that it was an extra one because the Blues won again, or that it was actually "free" as in the term "free". That seems unlikely.

I was partial to some taffy-like things called Mint Juleps. I don't think they make them any more. Tom Falcon was legendary for his proclivity to buy cases of Atomic Fireballs and throw them around the wharf. Legend has it that if you stand at the shore, where the wharf once stood, late at night, when the moon is full and the wind is calm and the birds are quiet and Jupiter aligns with Mars, you can still smell the cinnamon in the air. Fireballs were another favorite of mine as well.

Necco Wafers, as I mentioned, weren't all that popular (who likes licorice-flavored chalk?), but I bet they would have been if we'd known the wintergreen ones were triboluminescent.

Ah, yes . . . . . . Mint Juleps was a favorite of mine too, if there were any left when candy line arrived at our cabin or tent! I liken Mint Juleps to the modern day "Starburst" candies which have a taffy consistency and different favors. Thankfully I never had to visit the dentist while at camp due to filling extractions due to Mint Juleps or Sugar Daddys! Laughing You remember Sugar Daddys and Sugar Babies?

Yes, yuck on the Necco wafers! I'm surprised that Necco ever stayed in business with those things! Shocked

Never saw chewing gum nor bubble gum as part of Candy line. Wonder if it was taboo? Dave B would know. Reminds me of a popular tune from the early 60's by Lonnie Donegan . . . . . . . The Chewing Gum Song . . . . "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight?" One line from that tune still remains with me . . . . . "If Tin Whistles Are Made Of Tin, What Are Foghorns Made Out Of?"

Fond memories of our Wyanoke days!

Yeah, gum was definitely taboo. Can you imagine the mess - gum in the hair, mattresses, pillowcases, shoes, under bunk rails, Dining Hall and chapel floor (Freddie would have been apoplectic), shoes, urinals and dinner plates because there's nothing you can dowith gum when you're finished with it. And those were the days we were told that if you swallowed your gum, it'd stay in your stomach for seven years (I always wondered two things about that: 1) so what? and 2) what happens on the seventh anniversary plus one minute -- should you keep notes and make sure you're near the Pines when that moment hits??). What else could you do but park it somewhere?

I'm pretty sure you were there when Jeff Fincun got what I think now was a pallet-load of Dubble-Bubble gum, and he chewed it relentlessly from morning til night. I asked him for a piece once and he nearly handed me my head. I gather he never shared any of it. Or he just didn't like me.

And, right you are, Jim. For cost-effective home dentistry, I always recommended Sugar Daddys (sugar babys were a lot gooier -- they'd work fine for me now, but not when I was 9). I got one of those carnival-sized Sugar Daddys when I was a kid which had a 1/4-inch wooden dowell for a stick, and which was itself over a half-inch thick, maybe 5 inches wide and 7 inches tall. Didn't take long before that thing was all over my face and hair and it was covered with pine needles or sand. I wonder if you can still get those. My fillings and crowns and caps and teeth would just fall out on their own now if I even looked at a Sugar Daddy.

Anyway, a good rainy New Hampshire afternoon would reduce a bag of Sugar Babys to goo, which never came off your hands (like maple syrup).

Another mightily effective filling-extraction system was provided by Ju-Ju-Bes. Remember them? You could use them individually for precision extractions, collectively for full-mouth procedures. They were amazingly hard when stale. And none of their flavors appeared in nature.

For Candy lines they also had Good 'n Plenty. They were white and pink, right? with black licorice inside. Pat always referred to them as "Lousy and Too Few".

Another candy favorite which wasn't appropriate for Candy Line was Sen-Sen. I still love those things.

Jim, do you remember when I was in C-9 (councilor) I came back from town with about a dollar's worth of wax cyllinders (got 'em at that little candy store next to the movie theater) full of that sugary syrup? I went for a (still unclaimed) record of how many I could cram in my face and chew, one after the other. I remember Alex Kennedy rooting me on, but I can't remember who else was there. Damn lucky I didn't choke to death on that stuff. Damn good role model for the kids too, huh?

The concept behind that question about foghorns could also be applied to cod liver oil and baby oil.

Yep. Some fine times.

LOL . . . . . . Ju Ju B's always tasted like soap to me, and yes they were at the top as far as pulling fillings out! I forget what those cylinders were called, but I do remember "Nickel Nips" which contained the same syrup but in a wax bottle about 2" high. Although the syrup was of different colors, the taste was the same.

Ah, yes, the Cash Store was the name of that "general" store across the street from the movie theater. Great generic name!

Well I have to admit that I was one of those people that kept Necco Wafers and Good an Plentys on the shelf at the store. I hang my head in shame and walk away.

LOL Harry! We knew all along that it was you hoarding those Necco's! Besides the Mint Juleps I think Pat and Mike hoarded the Good & Plentys! There always seemed to be enough left over Pep-O-Mint Life Savers at the end of candly line on any given day. Laughing

Stew Borger liked Mint Juleps as I recall!

Didn't Tom Falcon maintain his own private supply of atomic fireballs?

Hi, Jim!

Yes, Fireballs were a favorite! That and Double Bubble chewing gum. I can remember "Fire Balls" being an integral part of camp life during the late 50's, early 60's. Anyone who had "Fire Balls" or "Double Bubble " had the status of a Washington insider.

I always went for the Sugar Baby's or Atomic Fireballs. Third choice was Good 'n Plenty. There was not gum allowed while I was at camp.

Fireball Falcon did always seem to have more fireballs than anyone else.

Mike & All

I can't come down too hard on Necco even though their wafers tasted like soap and never won the hearts of Wyanoke campers, except for a few! Laughing But I do remember the Necco SkyBar . . . . . . one of my favorites, along with Chuckles! Anyone remember if we ever had SkyBars or Chuckles as part of candy line??

http://www.necco.com/OurBrands/Default.asp?BrandID=11

Take a look at the above link, Mike! Necco Wafers is listed, LOL!

Respectfully Submitted,

Jim

P.S. Free Candy Line tomorrow!

I can almost taste them now, chalky little buggers.

I remember Skybars, and seem to recall that all four of those centers tasted exactly like the other three. I don't remember too much chocolate at candy line. Hershey's (male and female) is all I can remember.

Remember when 3 Musketeers bars were divided into 3 pieces so you could "Share 'em with your friends"? Share. Yeah, right.

Mike

I just talked with Dick, my brother, and he mentioned "Sour Balls" was a favorite of his during Candy Line. I don't remember them that much but I'm sure others will remember!

Hey, free candy line tomorrow for anyone that remembers Sour Balls.

Got plenty of Necco Wafers left over, anyone! Hey, they are only 30 years old but still tasty! Wink

Sour Balls- they were the hit for me. Not only did you get a good selection of flavors, but you sure could make them last! They were delivered right before quiet hour after lunch. Having to endure a double siesta (because of snickering after taps the previous night) 1 sour ball would last for 10 minutes. My candy lasted almost until Vespers! My folks once bought me a Sugar Daddy and as you know they take a while to finish- soo I put it away for safekeeping in one of the wood closet/compartments in C-6. Next day went to enjoy it but a 100 ants beat me to it! AGH

LOL, Mike . . . . . . it usually meant that the "Blues" won Laughing ! I don't think that there was truly ever a "free" candy line. It just meant that we wouldn't have to pay for the candy out of our own weekly allowance issued to us from the Camp Store. I'm sure that our parents were charged later on.

Speaking about allowances, I remember going to the Camp Store to pick up my allowance each week . . . . . . forget what the amount was, maybe a few quarters?? I always wondered if Irving could make a mistake in my favor!

Fond Memories!
