I was digging around for some camp-era musical scores and came across this W-2 from 1964. I was a junior in High School in '64, so I probably didn't even file that year. I was Walt Scheirer's JC in C-5 that summer, and it was my first paying gig at Wyanoke (remember, the first JC summer was paid for by parents. Like an intern.

$110.50 a month! Or is that $82.50 a month? I don't know why the two numbers. In any case, I'm using that 8 bucks I paid into FICA to good advantage now.

Truth be told, I'd do it all again.

LOL, Mike!

Why the difference between the $221.00 and the $165.00? Wonder if a non-taxable stipend was paid for your participation in the band? Anyway, I promise I won't tell!

At least you paid $8.80 in tax which is more than GE paid!

BTW . . . . . . Medicare witholding had not started yet!

You are correct, Mike. The 1st year JC's (or parents) paid a nominal fee to attend Wyanoke for the two months. I'm thinking somewhere around $155.00 back in the day circa 1962. And then as a 2nd year JC a modest salary of about the same amount was paid. However we did get free parking in the Midget parking lot sans any required county/town window sticker fees! Laughing

"You are correct, Mike. The 1st year JC's (or parents) paid a nominal fee" (221.00). "And then as a 2nd year JC a modest salary of " ($165.00).

"However we did get free parking in the Midget parking lot" behind the 1/4-inch rope draped with an ancient, moldy J-5, through which, not to mention over which, numerous 2+ (not quite 3)-feathered arrows winged their ways to your freshly waxed, then pine-tarred paint/Bondo finish. Maybe a tire or two. I know of at least one inner tube which dashed the hopes of a night in town, thanks to a 9-year-old demon.

If someone tried to charge me a fee for parking there, I'd have gone downtown and shot up the Town Hall - perfectly acceptable back then, but which would probably get you hauled up in front of the committee these days.

Pat or my Mom, I forget who, got high-centered one time trying to back out over the old stump which guarded the camp side of the entrance to the Midget parking lot. Probably Mom. Pat probably wouldn't admit to it. Well that's not fair. Of course he would. He said Mom was driving.

I'm going to wade into something about which I know practically nothing in that I was totally ignorant of the finances at Camp. However, the difference between those two dollar amounts is $56.00, and somewhere in the back of my rusty brain I seem to remember Bea Stone telling me that each staff member had $1.00 per camp season day added to their total compensation to reflect the room (sleeping) and board (eating) they received in addition to the actual money they received for their services during the season. I do not believe this applied to the pre- and post- camp work done to get the grounds ready for the season.

Now, please, nobody go and dig up all their old pay slips and look too deeply into this - remember, I said I knew practically nothing about finances. What I do know is that at least one summer I had so many "advances" that when it came time to get paid my envelope was very, very light.
