Does anyone recall if there was any secret to the chicken barbecue baste? Was it just butter (marg?) salt and pepper? Any or none of the above? I was never involved in the cooking, just the wolfing down, and always appreciated the preparation.

On another note, it's now been a year since Fran and I moved here to the Big Island of Hawaii. No more trail running in New England for me, but we had snow on Mauna Kea several times last winter, and the last time I ran up there, I started at a higher elevation than the top of Mt. Washington and ascended a couple of thousand feet more.

I don't imagine I'll be getting to any future Wyanoke reunions unless by some happy chance there's one in 2013 within a week or so of my 50th high school reunion (assuming someone organizes one). This place is about the size of Connecticut, and there's plenty going on to keep a drudge like me happy, and little going on elsewhere that sounds important enough to make me want to shift my butt. Our house should be finished in a couple of months, at which time the doors will be open to welcome visitors. We'd enjoy seeing any of you all who might get out this way, whether for lunch, a sleepover, or just tourism tips.

That is a good question, Pat, but remember, the Thursday night chicken baste was applied with a paint brush - so the real question is, "Where was that paint brush Wednesday?" (only kidding)

Good luck with your house.

Hi Pat,

It's great to hear from you again, and congrats on the successful move. It must be a shocking change from all those years in New England.

I'm not sure on this, but I think there was some vinegar involved in the baste, along with butter. I don't think I ever saw margerine used in the kitchen (which doesn't mean it wasn't used - I just never saw it, or in New Hampshire-ese, never sawrit.)

That wasn't the only thing slapped on with a paint brush. The toast was buttered with one as it came out of that conveyor belt toaster. Some pieces of toast werer like butter sponges, others dry except for a small moist (greasy) spot in the center.

I too wondered about those paint brushes, and assumed that when Freddie didn't need them any more, Phil could have 'em.

As I recall Bob Fox was intimately involved in cooking those chickens on that wire grate every Thursday, at least during the late 50's/early 60's. I'm sure that he would have the recipe that was probably concocted by Phil Hodgson. Does anyone know where Bob Fox might be and hopefully he is still with us?

I meant to mention that in my previous post. Yeah, Bob Fox did the barbecues till the bitter end. After the first cookout, he always had a hamburger.

As far as I know, he is still with us and living in Andover MA, or North Andover. I haven't communicated with him in years, but I understand that as few as a couple years ago, he was still actively birding and traveling extensively to do it. I hope that's the case.

I'd love to get an email address for him. I've spent many hours enjoying Martinis with him in the post-camp years, the last being almost ten years ago at Dana's cabin on Lower Beech Pond in Tuftonboro.
