September I had occasion to travel to the Lakes Region. Good fortune allowed me to visit Tom Falcon, meet his wife and catch up. Tom told me about Wyanoke.com and here I am. The following week I returned to Wolfeboro with my wife Lorraine and two of our three children, Max and Masha.
We toured Wolfeboro, Winter Harbor and visited the camp property, viewing the plaque. Many, many fine memories were triggered. We hope to spend a week on the lake next summer.
Like everyone, much has happened since camp closed. I have had several careers; most notable a professional dance caller. Lorraine and I lived in Tucson AZ for 18 years. We are in Connecticut now. Today, 10/29/11, the snow cold and wind make Tucson pretty appealling.
Casting about this site revives the warm and lasting memories of camp. Look forward to catching up you. Very Happy

Welcome to Wyanoke.com, Tod! We're glad that you found us and I know that you will enjoy all of the posts and photos here. Thanks to Mike Freeland's efforts we have a great forum to share and relive such great memories.

I just got back from Wolfeboro about 2 weeks ago, myself. We were up over "leaf peeper" week to attend my niece's wedding which was very nice. The weather was great for most of that week with temps in the 70's and 80's which is unusual for this time of year. We also took a day to re-do the Kancamaugus Highway between Conway and Lincoln, NH. I had not done that drive since the 60's! I posted some pics of that drive in the "Personal Photos Section" of the site.

How about that SNOW yesterday!!?? We only got about a half inch here in N. VA but I hear that Wolfeboro got about 14"! Surely that is a record for a pre-Halloween storm. I'm sure that CT got its share as well.

Welcome aboard, again!

P.S. It looks like you were a JC for only a year before your promotion to Councilor! Geez we had to do a 2-year stint as JC, Surprised !

We got a relative dusting and maintained power thru the storm. One of the lucky ones.

I was a one year wonder to fill the place of a last minute no-show. Worked for me. Looking forward to a return visit or two this year.

Tod, are you any relation to the Whittemores that were councilors, back when I was a Midget?

(And is it, "councilor" or "counselor") Question

BOTH, in that "councilor" indicates being a member of a council (which all staff members were), and "counselor" indicates someone who gives advice, or counsel (which all staff members did).

So, way back when, I guess my grandfather decided upon a term which would travel through time without losing any of it's meaning, regardless of how you spelled it, and certainly not because of how you pronounced it.

I anticipate David Ayers to amplify my statements. Laughing Very Happy

I was the first Whittemore of our family. My brother Tony attended camp for a couple of years after I started. Camp closed before I had children to send. Sad

I remember that Wyanoke always officially used the "councilor" spelling but don't have any insight as to why, though your "member of the council" suggestion makes sense. Some other camps prefer the "counselor" spelling. Now both terms are probably giving way to "Team Guidance Leader" or some other eduspeak.

Todd, welcome! Great to hear from you. Sounds like you'll be buying lakefront property any year now.

That would be nice. At the moment, we are content to tour lakes for variety. We did a bit of boating in the Peconic Bay in Long Island. It was our first time in 'big' water. We were lost a few times-lots of fun.
