First things first -- Happy Birthday, David Mo**r**l Bentley (a month early).
And Steve, the puzzle's a fine tribute to your kindergarten classmate, but it's mostly just reminding me of how much I've forgotten. Hoping others feel the same way.
About three fourths finished and stopped cold. It would help to remember the the fourth person in the P*********s quartet (actually I got the group's name, but I'm not spoiling it here).
And a shout out to Jim Culleton Tom Falcon, Jeff Fincun and Pat & Mike Freeland who have all been 'talking' to Steve about the puzzle, but have not yet shown up here.... _________________ David Irons

OK, OK, I relent!
Actually, I've been in here quite a bit, setting this up. I usually try to get out of the way and let other guys drop their two cents.
There are a couple of clues which have me stopped too, even though I've seen the solutions page (and edited it) I managed to avoid looking at it too closely. I haven't had time to get back to it for a week or so.
That thing does bring back some memories doesn't it? We're talking about things that happened 60 years ago in some cases! As far as I'm concerned, some of you whom I haven't seen since Wyanoke still look just as you were 40 or 50 years ago. I don't.
Cliff (Irons) just signed in to the site this morning, so welcome aboard Cliff. There are some great memories in here. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

Steve,
Thanks, I have enjoyed this puzzle although I think the time frame it references is a little before my time at camp. I started in 1970 _________________ J-1 1970, Marc Liddle from Scotland

Happy birthday, David. Nice job, Steve.
Tom, I'm developing a crossword puzzle for us late 1960s and 70s whippersnappers.
Steve and/or Mike, I see that there are numerous free websites for making crossword puzzles. Did you use one of these or something else to make Steve's puzzle look so polished? _________________ Camper: J-8 1965 (Kevin Ryan), J-8 1966 (Mike Freeland), S-6 1967 (Russ Hatch), S-3 1968 (Jeremy Cripps), and JA-2 1969 (Dan Mannis).

Well, I guess it is time for another hint.
This hint will help you with 20-down, as well as the four other words that are related to it: 20, 40 and 43 across, and 30 down.
For this hint, go to the second page of my pictures in my personal "photo gallery."
Good luck !!

I did it, still am stumped by a couple. I dind't know Webb Dann very well - don't know his nickname. The only waterski instructor I remember was John Hsu. I remember spilling while attempting to water ski and someone calling my somersaulting seemingly forever as the 100 yard douche. I wonder if Dave Bentley remembers trying to use a round piece of plywood behind the ski boat and diving down way under the water.)
Also, not being at all athletic I haven't any idea what short stops do with grounders. I guess I't hike it to the quarterback. or is that tennis?
Midget fair was the Cabintown Fair, there must be some other name, too?
Other'n that I got all the stuff. Nice work Steve! _________________ Living with wife Vicki happily retired after we moved back to Cornwall, Pa. |

Pat, you opened the door to discussing waterskiing, and I am glad to see that your acrobatic fall didn't leave any permanent scars; however, had you been involved with the first contract waterski service, you would certainly remember the name. As a matter of fact, a small Penn Yan skiff, and a powerful motor weren't the only "hot" attributes to waterskiing in those days.
Yes, I do remember the ski disc, but have no idea whatever happened to it. Scott Kent and I used a rowboat seat tied to a ski rope and pulled behind a small pram to explore the bottom along the coast. We would hold the seat at arms length, angle it down, and, like the dive fins on a submarine, we would descend rapidly to the bottom and then be pulled great distances looking for booty. The big hazzard was getting the rope tied up in debris and putting us in harms way. Obviously, the technique never quite caught on in general use. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

LOL, Dave! I do remember taking lessons as a 13 year old back in '58 with her as the observer while Russ drove the boat! Ooh La La! I wonder if he and Mimi are still in the area?

David and Jim have good memories.
This will help you for the puzzle: 1-across.
For those who do not remember, go to the 1959 Dining Room Roster to find the name of the contracted water skiing instructor. And yes, his wife's name was Mimi, and the was gorgeous. _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

Well, that was before the time when I actually had any interest in, or, um, responding to, a beautiful set of, uh, eyes watching me ski. I was 9. Ahh youth!
I did waterski at one point, and (I had to look this up) the guy who ran it was George Greer, from '60 - '70. I never competed in the 100-yard douche though. Anyone remember him? I have a vague recollection that he was relatively short and built like a fire hydrant. Dark hair and red trunks (which I think were permanently attached to him - that's all he ever wore.) Did he have a dive shop or something like that downtown? _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

LOL, Mike! I was only 13 at the time but we were quite impressionable at that age.
I'm wondering if George Greer was with Northeast Marina from downtown Wolfeboro? I know that Northeast Marina was contracted by Wyanoke for water skiing at some point during the time frame you mentioned. I'm sure that Dave B. will know. _________________ '56 - J-9 J. Moulton

Gosh !! There has been very little activity lately. I had hoped that this puzzle would attract more interest and enthusiasm.
We only have ten more days until David's birthday.
Here are two answers:
26 down. Campers/councilors whose fathers were Wyanokers were called "chips." I assume this came from "chip of the old block" or some such thing.
1 down. Mr. Dann's full name was "E. Webster Dann." Everyone called him "Web." I was his JC in 1958, when one of the kids in J-4 called him "Webber." Web hated this nick name, and assigned me the task of squelching it. So, I had a little "pep talk" with the campers and told them that the nick name was totally off limits. After a while, they stopped using the term.
Hope to hear from others of you in the not too distant future.
Or -- submit a post and ask for specific clues and help.
Cheers to all. _________________ 1951: C-9. F. Whitemore, P. Durkee.

I thought this was a great puzzle, and while I knew that waterskiing was contracted out, I never went to the waterfront, would have been scared to be out where my feet couldn't touch the bottom, etc. That may be a bit of an overstatement but not too much.
Happy Birthday, Dave.
Now I'm trying to help solve a puzzle that Mike has set me up with. Never end a sentence with a preposition I'm told. |

Hi Bob,
It's funny - I started out at camp as a competitive swimmer and got my Jr. and St. Lifesaving patches from Dan Mannis, and by the end of my career at camp, Bob Fox didn't even assign me to wharf or swim duty. I almost never went to the waterfront in the later years except to take a canoe or something. Thank you Dr. Fox. I appreciate that he recognized that some of us just didn't much care for the water.
I didn't get the ski instructor either - it was before my time.
I love this crossword idea. Anyone have another one up his sleeve? _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster
