Probably the easiest way to see the relationship between Camp Wyanoke and Mitt Romney's home is to use Google Maps. Here is how I did it: click on google; click on maps; type in Forest Rd, Wolfeboro, NH to Clark Rd, Wolfeboro, NH; when that comes up, enlarge the picture so it shows road names; adjust the "A" point to be on Wyanoke Lane and adjust the "B" point to be on the far end of Clark Rd just before it turns. This will put the "A" point right on Wyanoke and the "B" point right on Romney's house.
Good Luck. If I were computer articulate maybe I could have done this and presented the map right here, but I'm not so I c ouldn't. Sorry. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

Great instructions, Dave, and that puts it just where your description was as viewed from the Town Docks.
I was just out on my motorcycle to get some coffee and I heard on the news that Mr. Romney had been in the 4th of July parade in Wolfeboro.
Hearing the name "Wolfeboro" here in Colorado has a funny tinge to it, and of course I'm reminded of the 4th of July track meet, and the Wyanoke Band's annual participation in the parade, under the direction of Burt Vaughan or Walt Scheirer.
After the parade, a special treat was to be allowed to go up to the park and spend some time at the Huggins Hospital Street Fair.
Do they still have the fair on the 4th, or am I mixing the hospital fair with some other time in the summer (did it correspond to the Cabintown Fair)? Funny how things get fuzzy over time.
It was all so easy-going and Mayberry-like. Now I wonder how easy it would be with all the roofs along main street covered with Secret Service guys with guns. Even if you don't see them, they're there.
A pistachio cone at Dockside was another reason to go to town. _________________ '56-C-9 C. Mosher '57-C-9 Bill Feaster

In my time at camp the Huggins Hospital Street Fair was always the weekend of the Cabintown Fair rather than the 4th of July. I also have fond memories of playing in the Wyanoke Band for the Huggins Hospital Street Fair. It could be as hot as a firecracker, but we had groupies (little old ladies) who would dutifully sit out in the sun and applaud for us (or Walt, anyway) as enthusiastically as if we were playing as well as the US Marine Corps Band under the direction of John Philip Sousa. Afterwards I'd get my ice cream cone (black raspberry, please), buy some used pulp paperback books at the fair, and enjoy the smell of mothballs wafting out from the rummage sale tent.

True, Mitt Romney is here in town for the week, and annual tradition of his family with as many as possible joining him and his lovely wife for some family and cousin time on the shore of Winnipesaukee.
Wyanoke did in fact participate in the July 4th parade, but I think that participation faded away towards the later years of camp. I do remember marching in the parade (yes, for a few, precious few) years I played the drums under the tutleage and mentorship of David Hemphill, so you can blame him! For several years the camp band assembled in the park at dockside following the parade and played patriotic music for about an hour.
This was sitting down and much more pleasant than marching up and down Main Street.
I think one reason Camp faded out of the Town parade was the fact that we had a 4th of July Swim Meet in the morning, and a 4th of July Track Meet in the afternoon. These two activities pretty much consumed both the camper's and men's time for that day.
The Huggins Hospital fair generally falls on the first weekend of August, and is now only Friday and Saturday nights. "Back in the day" it used to be a three day/night event, with a winner-take-all Chuck-A-Luck finale about 9:45PM. There is quite a bit of money on the table at 9:44 PM, and a very happy somebody at 9:46PM!
The Hospital fair probably overlapped the Cabintown Fair, timing-wise.
Needless to say, with the presence of presumptive-candidate Romney in the parade the Town was full to the brim - people everywhere. I must say, as a matter of factual opinion, the huge crowd lining the parade route was extremely well behaved, and vocal as any of the candidates for upcoming offices walked by. Mr Romney was the only presidential hopeful, but there were candidates for State offices, State offices in Washington, local county offices, and even local Town offices. All political candidates are in the same parade division, the last group to walk, so when Mr Romney came along the crowd was ready to cheer.
So, in the spirit of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Mowgli, and Journey at Sunrise, I wish you all a very Happy 4th of July. Don't forget to thank our forefathers for their forethought or we'd never of had a fourth. _________________ C-1 49 J-7 52 S-3 55 J-10 58

You're right, The fair was in August. I just happened to be going through old slides and found some that my father took of our band in Wolfeboro on the fair grounds. That cleared my mind a bit. I did have the events confused.
Further, my recollections of the parade are really old ones, so Dave, you're right - we quit doing that before I became a councilor.
Confound the torpedoes, full speed ahead! Happy Fourth!
EDIT 7/05/12
Here are a couple of those pictures I came across coincidentally yesterday while we were discussing the band in Wolfeboro. I think this is around 1962 - 64. I was in High School, from the look of it, and I think that's John Morgan sitting next to me with the trombone. Pat's in there, and Walt Scheirer, of course. Did Tom Falcon play the clarinet? Or maybe the bassinette? Anyway, if any of you know some names, please respond.
