I have begun to post the Sunday morning bulletins in the Personal Gallery. 1975 is complete so go take a look. I have also copied my personal notes for the 1974 Sunday morning guest speaker schedule and the vespers services. Sorry about the hand writing, and unfortunately it hasn't gotten much better. I also have the 1974 bulletins but probably won't get to them until the end of the summer. There has been a lot of discussion about the hymns sung in chapel and they are listed on the bulletins. I have hand written notes on each of the Sunday morning services for 74 and 75 and could post those if there is any interest. I guess I was compulsive when I was 17 and 18. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks a lot Jim. Great memories there.

I was just looking at the bulletin from August 3, 1975, and was struck by three things: First, it was an evening service. I vaguely remember evening chapel services, but I forgot what caused them. What the hell did we do all morning with no chapel service?

The second thing was the matter-of-fact announcements:

Tuesday: Tennis with Belknap, Farewell Banquet
Thursday: Busses leave.

Yeah, busses leave -- forever.

Finally, Camp closed on August 7th? Or did that usher in the girls etc.? August 7th seems really early. I wasn't there for all of the '75 season - was it an abbreviated session?

Thanks, Jim. I also enjoyed looking through these.

There was a note in that set of documents, Mike, that gave some background into the why's and wherefore's of the evening service on August 7th, 1975. It marked the return to camp of Rev. Tom Niblock, who at that time was a minister of a church in Maine, at least in the summer. He had his own services to do there Sunday morning, so it was arranged that the service in the Wyanoke Chapel on August 7th would be an evening service, to accomodate his schedule. One curious and unexplained quirk in the documents: Tom originally proposed doing a travelogue slide show instead of a religious service, but between the time of his correspondence with Jim and August 7th, that got changed, and a regular Sunday service was held, only after dinner. I wonder whose decision that was. Maybe BMB was not a fan of travel slide shows! Or maybe he just felt it was not an appropriate substitution. I also don't remember what we did that Sunday morning instead of Chapel, but I'm sure Bob Fox and the Planning Board planned some imaginative wrinkles in the schedule.

Following the first six weeks of camp in 1974 and 1975, it wasn't just the girls... there was a two-week Activity Camp which was open to girls. As I remember, there were about 12-20 girls of various ages present in Cabintown. Most had some prior connection to Wyanoke, such as a brother there or an alumnus in the family or a Winchester connection. Many though not close to all boys from the first six weeks also remained.

I believe there were buses that left for Boston and New York after the two week Activity Camp as well in 1975, though I could be wrong.

The more I read/think about that evening chapel service, the more I think I remember it. I was mostly occupied with graduate field work that summer, but came back from Wyoming in time to get a couple of weeks (and mountain trips) in at Wyanoke. I do remember Tom coming over from Hancock, and Jim organizing the whole thing. That letter from Tom, talking about the potential traveling problems seems familiar too. It's funny how a mere 30 years or so can blur otherwise crystal-clear recollections.

What DID we do that morning? Late, LATE reveille (9:30)? All-morning swims? Hangover rehab? The Catholics still had to go to Mass, though, I'll wager, AND attend the evening service. Long day for them, huh?

Yeah, I'd forgotten about the Activity camp thing. The most salient thing to me about those last two weeks was the arrival of the girls, and sudden waterfront dress code restrictions.

Hey Jim, do you have more of these things? Your post suggested that you did. I'd love to see them.

My wife and just got back from vacation-camping in our trailer in the White Mountains of Arizona. We were at 7600', had some rain every day (which we actually enjoy), did some walking, reading, napping and playing games. Joyce plays a mean game of rummy. This was ther first vacation in 25 years without children.

I have the bulletins for 1974 yet to enter and personal notes for each service (1974 and 1975). I will scan them in when I can. The next couple of days will be spent unpacking the trailer and then preparing to having flooring put in through out the house. In other words, I have plenty of "honey do's" to do before I get to scanning the rest of the material. Look for it the end of August or the begining of September.
