While fishing for Blue Gills with my son last night I caught a 12" Large Mouth bass. For Alec Stansel's records, 9' 7weight rod, 7.5' 5x leader, and a really cheap hardware store pan fish popper probably a size 14. It was white with rubber legs and a lime green hackle.
I have forgotten what the final award is at the end of the season but I am looking forward to winning it. _________________ 1965-1975

Mike Freeland will be the final judge. The fact that I was in his tent for three years will not have any affect on the judging. _________________ 1965-1975

Hey now just a minute. Me? What I know about fishing... Chris, you ever remember me taking you guys FISHING? Maybe I allowed it, but I never encouraged it. I never even quibbled about the dynamite you damn kids insisted on dragging with us. You gotta admit that we did eat pretty good on overnights though, didn't we? Water skiing always seemed a bit sluggish the next day though. Oh well.
I used to go fishng in a rowboat out at bass rock when I was a Junior. Sat there for what seemed hours (in retrospect I think might it might have been minutes - 3 to 4 maybe - I'm an instant-grat guy), catching nothing of note. I used worms (when Norm had 'em) because I was scared spitless (alas, one little letter) of helgrammites. Still am. Every time they show up at my door with pamhlets I grab a bottle and run for the bathroom and hide.
I caught mostly sunfish and the occasional catfish if I caught anything. Sunnies were small and slimy and kinda pretty and bony and spiny, whereas the catfish were large and slimy and ugly and bony and spiny with a catch -- if you touched them just there they'd sting you. Made you want to eat them right NOW! That'll show him.
What, I said to myself, is the point of this? The bait is too scary to fool with, and what it catches can hurt you!
And get this: about two years ago I found out that the bass rock I was fishing at was not the REAL Bass Rock. Every Wendy Carr I can remember went to someone who caught his prize at Bass Rock, and it was usually a bass. That explains it! That's why I never won the Big Prize, the Wendy Carr! I was at the Wrong Wrock!
Oh well, water over the dam. What little things I did catch in Winter Harbor somehow got magically transferred to the kitchen where Phil Hodgson prepared them and fried them in flour and butter, salt and pepper and served them to us at our J-11 table on our own serving platter at dinner. Such a little thing, but it sure made a kid feel special, no matter how small or bony the fish were. I'm sure that was just another nefarious trick to make us kids want to go back to camp. Yep, sure of it.
Now that I think of it, I got some pretty good bites from crayfish, but it was always a sunny, or whatever bit so strong got away. Really.
So Dave, thanks for spelling out the entry rules. Bails me out of the competition -- I'm obviously not qualified. I can't handle eating the bones any more, and still fear helgrammites (even with modern meds they're hard to get rid of).
However, as with any contest I have no knowlege of, I am fully willing to be fair and honest as an impartial judge. Even though Chris Gill was in my tent for 3 years and we never got along and still don't communicate by phone or anything like that, I have no biases. (By the way Chris, how's that toenail thing coming along? That ointment I recommended help? And yes, you made the best iced coffee any wyanoker ever attempted). None of that matters though
And Jeff Grush, who sent me a jar of the most heavenly tasting honey I've ever experienced: if he gets involved in this viscious comptetion, another jar of that honey wouldn't even sway me even slightly in his direction, not that he'd expect that. He's WAYabove that sort of thing.
So Alec, what have you got going? Hmmmm? Really, this is completely unbiased, depending on what you have to offer.
I'll need pictures: your fish against a white background with a suitable scale object next to it. Liquor bottles are generally good, as are heavy equipment - graders and the like.

On another note, I can't think of anything I envy or admire more than a guy going out fishing for Blue Gills with his son.
What your son is getting from you here Chris, is what I got in some measure from some councilor at Wyanoke as a kid -- the cameraderie of an older guy who was willing to spend those quiet moments with me and show me how. Conversely, what you're getting from your son is what some councilor hopefully got from me -- the cameraderie of an appreciative little guy who needed the experience and reveled in the attention. I don't think there's anything more significant than mutual quiet moments, child or adult. Of those, my best were at Wyanoke, both child and adult. Your kids are lucky to have you.

OK, so get these pictures coming. Remember, I need Scale to make the award evaluation to award the award to the awardee. We'll post 'em here. YeeHaww!

Way to go Chris! It has been a slow start to the season here with rather chilly temps - but I did get out after striped bass last week - here's the first of the year - a schoolie albeit, but a fine start. Shall we have both a freshwater and saltwater category? It seems only fair. Tight lines to all, and in memory of Norm Risser I suggest we name this contest after him! Alec

Alec,
I agree with the salt and fresh water catagories, although people catch lots of stripers on the CT river up here in Springfield and we are at least 60 miles from the sound. I guess it should be Fresh and saltwater game fish. _________________ 1965-1975

Is that you holding the fish? Thats a pretty good size perch.
I also have a question about the camping pictures. From Looking at the stove and coolers that picture could have been taken in 1965. Is it a recent photo? _________________ 1965-1975

A native Square Tail from the Nulhegan River outside Island Pond VT. 5/26/08. Maybe not the biggest but a very pretty fish. _________________ 1965-1975

Wow, Alec and Chris, you guys are rockin'. Kind of hard for me to compete since I don't have any fishing gear and hadn't even been fishing with somebody else's gear for 10 years, but I hope Mike will consider this entry from me anyway: this 1.75 pound salmon I pulled in today. It didn't have much fight left in it by the time I reeled it in.

Nice work Fellas! Yes Chris, that's me and those are recent pictures - taken the first week of June. My gears pretty old, though the cooler is the classic Coleman steel belted model, still made by them. Two blocks of ice and you're good for days. What a nice brookie! Well done! And David, looks like you've got the right idea... Bon appetite!! God bless, Alec _________________ 72: C-4 (Bob Chase)
